This resource package aims to provide some ways to help teachers develop responsive practices that offer English language learners access to participation within the context of Social Studies curriculum.

The task of teaching English language learners goes beyond the scope of this website, and should be pursued by all educators interested in teaching in a multicultural context, such as our Canadian society.

Although teaching English at the same time as the curriculum is not the only responsibility of Social Studies nor is it exclusive to the field, it directly affects this subject area, due to its high demand on the students' ability to communicate in various forms.

Oral participation, the ability to read and write, argue, make a statement, and so on, within the conventions of the English language, makes it crucial for Social Studies educators who take multiculturalism in our classrooms seriously, to pursue this matter closely.

Teachers need to familiarize themselves with different concepts of language acquisition in order to serve this demographic in the best possible way.
